FOOD WALK - A BITE OF DENMARK
Experience the Danish classics – join a flavorful walk
On this guided FOOD WALK, we will sample some true classics of Danish food culture:
- In a country surrounded by water, it comes as no surprise that fish is a traditional starter at a good dinner or celebration. We therefore begin with fish and make our first stop at one of the town’s smokehouses, where we enjoy a delicious serving of cold-smoked salmon.
- "Smørrebrød" is a true favorite on the Danish lunch table, as it is based on simple, high-quality ingredients and a strong tradition of craftsmanship. The open-faced rye bread topped with everything from herring to roast beef showcases both creativity and respect for local ingredients.
- Through its role as fast, accessible street food – especially from the iconic Danish hot dog stands found across the country – the hot dog has become a true Danish classic. It is loved for its combination of soft bread, juicy sausage, and classic toppings such as remoulade, crispy fried onions, and pickled cucumber.
- Ask any child to point out their favorite behind the bakery counter, and the answer will undoubtedly be: the rum ball! And it has to be the one with colorful sprinkles! This small round cake represents Danish baking traditions and the ability to reduce food waste by reusing leftover cake. The soft, truffle-like mixture rolled in coconut or sprinkles delivers an intense flavor of cocoa and rum essence. The rum ball is the kind of nostalgia you never outgrow!
- The tour also includes another dessert – because today you are allowed to have two! Danish summer and sunshine are inseparably linked with a delicious soft serve ice cream – simple and irresistible.
Along the way, as we walk through the harbor area and the town’s cozy streets, the guide will share stories about Danish food culture. There will also be time for stories about Hvide Sande – about fishing, life by the sea, and the people who help create the town’s unique atmosphere every day.
One of these people is Nils, your guide on the tour
Nils is 53 years old and has a great passion for food, ingredients, and life by the sea. He is a restaurateur and ran a French restaurant in Hamburg together with his husband for several years. After moving to Denmark in 2022, he worked as a fishmonger – a job that gave him an even deeper love for seafood and local fishing traditions. Over the past two years, he has worked as a lighthouse keeper at Lyngvig Lighthouse.\ When Nils is not working, he loves being outdoors – catching shrimp, picking mushrooms, and cooking with ingredients from nature. On the FOOD WALK – Taste of Hvide Sande, he shares his enthusiasm for local flavors, great stories, and life by the North Sea.
FOOD WALK – A taste of Denmark is a cozy and informal experience where delicious tastings, local history, and the fresh western sea breeze go hand in hand. No one leaves hungry – but everyone leaves full and with a memorable experience.
The tour takes place at a relaxed pace and is suitable for anyone who wants to taste Danish favorites!
