FOOD WALK - A Proper Dose of Smoke

Join a guided tour in Hvide Sande – full of smoke and delicious flavors!

This tour is exclusively suitable for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to sign up.

On this guided FOOD WALK through Hvide Sande, the theme is SMOKE! We will therefore taste some of the local specialties that share a deep, smoky flavor.

Along the way, we will make 5 stops, and we naturally begin with what best characterizes a Danish harbor town – smoked fish.

- We will enjoy it at one of the town’s smokehouses, where quality and craftsmanship are top class. In the past, fish and other foods were smoked for practical reasons – to make them last longer. Today, this is no longer necessary, as there are easier ways to preserve food, but the traditional craft still has its place – simply because smoked fish tastes fantastic!

- At Café Gaflen, the menu offers many delicacies. One of them is Flammkuchen! The one we will taste today is with spring onions and delicious slices of smoked bacon.

- After that, we will take a break from the tastings and instead stop by the fish auction hall. The auction plays a central role in the fishing industry, for the town, and for the local community.

- At Havnens Pølsevogn, we will have a true classic – a hotdog. For this occasion, it is of course made with a smoked sausage, which complements the flavors perfectly.

- We finish the tour at a truly traditional brown pub, Æ’ Karklud. Here we will have a local snack – a dabs – which we wash down with a Classic or Pilsner beer, naturally served in a bottle.

As we walk through the harbor area and the town’s cozy streets, the guide will tell stories about Hvide Sande – about fishing, life by the sea, and the people who help create the town’s unique atmosphere every day.

One of these people is Nils, your guide on the tour

Nils is 53 years old and has a great passion for food, ingredients, and life by the sea. He is a restaurateur and for a number of years ran a French restaurant in Hamburg together with his husband. After moving to Denmark in 2022, he worked as a fishmonger – a job that gave him an even deeper love for seafood and local fishing traditions. Over the past two years, he has worked as a lighthouse keeper at Lyngvig Lighthouse.\ When Nils is not working, he loves being outdoors and enjoys, among other things, catching shrimp, foraging mushrooms, and cooking with ingredients from nature. On FOOD WALK – The Taste of Hvide Sande, he shares his enthusiasm for local flavors, good stories, and life by the North Sea.

FOOD WALK – A Good Dose of Smoke is a cozy and informal experience where great tastings, local history, and the fresh west coast wind go hand in hand. No one leaves hungry – but everyone leaves full and with a richer experience.
